What we do

Empower leaders

A forest covered in fog with sunlight streaming through the trees.

Coalition and organization effectiveness to expand equitable access to nature.

Inclusion Outdoors partners with organizations, coalitions, and community leaders to design and deliver inclusive, community-led strategies that expand equitable access to nature and the outdoors. We strengthen vision and planning, evaluation and learning, coalition building, and community engagement—so communities can build lasting pathways for outdoor participation, leadership, and impact.

Services to empower leaders

  • We support organizations and coalitions in clarifying their vision and mission, setting shared goals, creating partnership and initiative roadmaps and planning and facilitating community-led steering committees.

  • We build evaluation capacity for organizations and coalitions by writing evaluation plans, developing tools, training staff, and supporting data collection and analysis. We also create reports, conduct asset mapping, and coach teams to integrate evaluation practices into ongoing work.

  • We work with cross sector partners to build coalitions and create collective impact initiatives to expand equitable access to nature. This includes coalition formation and partnership strengthening to sustain strong partnerships.

  • We design and facilitate inclusive processes that foster trust and connection. This includes community engagement, professional development, and holding space for healing, ceremonies, and collective visioning — ensuring those impacted by the work have a voice and role in the process.

  • We design cohesive program continuums for coalitions and collective impact models. The grade-level progressions ensure nature-based experiences are frequent, meaningful, connected and aligned with curricula.

  • We collaborate with organizations and coalitions navigating the policy landscape through coordinated advocacy efforts to prioritize equitable nature access. This includes engagement with elected officials, mobilizing networks to support key legislation, and collaborating with state and local coalitions to advance large-scale policy initiatives.

Examples of our work empowering leaders

  • Group of teenagers, with their backs to the camera, sitting on sloping grass, looking out over the ocean, with the sunlight reflecting off the surface.

    Community-led collective impact

Through the Richmond Outdoors Coalition, we have implemented a community-led collective impact initiative to connect Richmond youth and families with nature. The Richmond Outdoors Coalition is a group of organizations who provide a coordinated pathway of outdoor experiences for Richmond youth and families, including field trips, gardening, recess activities, family programs and leadership opportunities in Richmond and beyond.

  • 1 adult and 4 children walking with their backs to the camera along a dirt and snow covered trail, with snow on the ground and tall trees in the background.

    District-wide environmental literacy alignment

In partnership with the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District, we developed a comprehensive Environmental Education roadmap for every student.  This partnership supports students from Transitional Kindergarten through High School, to engage in a coordinated sequence of nature-based experiences. Ranging from schoolyard explorations to immersive field-based science, in partnership with community based organizations, these experiences are vertically aligned with California’s environmental principles and state standards.

  • A young boy and an adult sit at a table working on a craft project inside a yurt with wooden lattice walls. They are focused on their work, with craft supplies spread on the table.

    Community needs assessment

In partnership with the Youth Transportation Organization (Yoots), we led a community-based assessment to identify the specific transportation challenges and priorities for accessing nature. We utilized these findings to secure a $1.8 million grant for an electric bus and two electric SUVs, directly addressing the transportation barrier for local schools and community-based organizations.
